Andrei--

I am not sure if your statement is in response to the theories espoused in Freakonomics, or to the perversions thereafter applied, but I did see Levitt & Dubner speak at dear old Ohio State, (which is how I came to recognize your statement, despite my economic ignorance!) and they seemed to refute all exntensions of the Roe v. Wade = Less Crime argument, and any such corruptions of what they appeared to promote as an "inoffensive" and "apolitical" experiment in interdisciplinary economics.

But this hasn't really touched upon the Asian nationalism question. Identity is indeed a frightening and dangerous thing, especially when it comes to be based on historically entrenched patterns of largely mythical cultural suboordination. (Think of the popularity of the minstrel show in "Progressive" America...)

But now I shall cease and move back into the comfortable realm of aesthetics.

Economically Yours,
Jessi.

When I think of nationalism (the student is 17 years old):

Assassination

I don't think that all people in Japan think this (referring to the article) way, and I trust Michael when he says that the majority doesn't either.

Correct if I'm wrong, but isn't there this big "Bushido" (Wu Shi Dao in Chinese) honor thing that is still a part of the culture and personality of Japan? If so, I think it would explain a lot.
